Breast Lift

In today’s world, beautifully accentuated breasts are the dream of many women. Some are fortunate to be born with ample bosoms, yet this gift comes with a price. Large breasts, albeit alluring, often succumb to the relentless pull of gravity, losing their once-perky allure over time. Weight fluctuations and the aftermath of breastfeeding also take a toll, leaving breasts sagging and deflated. The challenges are not merely physical; they extend to the realm of fashion. It becomes an arduous task to don form-fitting garments and elegant lingerie when the weight of the breasts requires constant support. The natural shape distorts, elongating and causing the nipples to point downward, diminishing the confidence one feels in their own skin. If you find yourself grappling with these challenges, fear not, for there is a solution: the breast lift, a transformative procedure tailored just for you. With this magical intervention, breasts can be lifted and rejuvenated, restoring their youthful vitality and sculpting curves that complement your figure beautifully. The procedure offers flexibility; your breasts can not only be lifted but also enhanced with implants for a fuller silhouette or reduced to achieve the perfect proportions.

The Process of the Surgery

The surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia. General anesthesia is recommended for larger breasts, while local anesthesia is suitable for smaller breasts. In the most common type of surgery, three incisions are made:

  • circular incision around the areola
  • horizontal incision in the crease under the breast
  • vertical incision connecting the previous two incisions.

The excess skin is dissected from its base, and absorbable sutures are used to lift the breast tissue to the desired height, giving the breast a new shape. The excess skin is then removed, and the nipple and areola are relocated to a higher position, matching the new shape. If necessary, the areola can be reduced in size. The incisions are closed with continuous sutures placed in the subcutaneous tissue and the lower layer of the skin, which will be removed later. After the surgery, the breasts are stabilized to prevent them from pulling or stretching the stitches due to their weight, which could adversely affect the scarring process.
In some cases where there is relatively little excess skin, a different type of surgery, called “short scar” intervention can be performed to achieve fewer and less visible scars. This procedure is only possible if there is a relatively small amount of excess skin. In such cases, excess skin is removed from around the areola and from the area below, outward, and sideways, eliminating the need for the horizontal incision under the breast.

After the Procedure

After the breast lift surgery, your breasts will be covered with gauze and a surgical support bra. Small tubes may be inserted into the incision sites to drain excess blood or fluid. Expect your breasts to be swollen and bruised for approximately two weeks. You will likely experience pain and soreness around the incisions, which may appear red or pink for a few months. Numbness in your nipples, areolae, and breast skin could persist for about six weeks. During the initial days post-surgery, take prescribed pain medication and avoid activities that strain, bend, or involve lifting. Sleep on your back or side to relieve pressure on your breasts. Refrain from sexual activity for at least 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure. You cannot take a full-body shower or bath until the stitches are removed. You can wash yourself, but no water should touch the surgical site until then. Drainage tubes near your incisions will be removed the next day. Some stitches dissolve naturally, while others need removal, typically 3 weeks after the surgery. Wear the support bra continuously for 3-4 weeks, then wear the bra for another 3-4 weeks during the day. Silicone tape or gel is recommended for your incisions to aid in healing. During the healing process, shield your breasts from sunlight. Once healed, continue protecting your incisions from sun exposure.

Results

You will observe an immediate transformation in the appearance of your breasts. Their shape will evolve and settle further in the coming months. Initially, scars may appear red and slightly raised. While scars are permanent, they will gradually soften and thin out within 1 to 2 years. Importantly, breast lift scars can often be concealed by bras and bathing suits, ensuring your confidence in any outfit. Many patients find that their bra size appears slightly smaller after a breast lift. This change occurs naturally as your breasts become firmer and rounder, even if you haven’t undergone a breast reduction alongside the lift. It’s essential to note that breast lift results may not be entirely permanent. As you age, your skin naturally loses some elasticity, and slight sagging might occur, particularly if you have larger or heavier breasts. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight can significantly contribute to preserving your uplifted appearance over time.

Risks of the Surgery

Breast lift surgery, like any surgical procedure, comes with inherent risks. While complications are rare, they can include issues such as bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to anesthesia, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. Temporary disturbances in sensation -either reduced or heightened sensitivity- may rarely occur due to nipple relocation but are usually temporary. Scarring is an inevitable part of the process, despite surgeons utilizing precise techniques to minimize it; individual healing responses can vary significantly. An uneven shape and size of the breast could occur because of the changes during the healing process. Additional surgery may be needed to correct it. While breastfeeding is usually possible after a breast lift, some might have trouble producing enough milk.

Considerations of Breast Lift Surgery

You will observe an immediate transformation in the appearance of your breasts. Their shape will evolve and settle further in the coming months. Even with meticulous surgical techniques, high-quality sutures, and optimal post-operative care, it cannot be guaranteed that surgical scars will be entirely invisible. Typically, incisions around the areola and the vertical incision below the nipple tend to heal most attractively. The scar under the breast, however, often poses challenges. Variations in skin qualities in these areas result in different healing outcomes. Delicate skin around the areola tends to form finer scars compared to the thicker skin under the breast. Therefore, individuals considering this surgery must weigh whether visible surgical scars might concern them more than sagging breasts, or if they find them acceptable in exchange for the desired breast shape. The tendency for scarring significantly depends on the individual. If surgical scars remain thick and prominent even months after the procedure, and do not improve sufficiently, a minor scar correction surgery can typically enhance their aesthetic appearance. It is advisable to avoid frequent weight fluctuations and smoking. For patients with larger breasts, wearing a bra periodically is recommended to prevent the skin from stretching again. Importantly, the surgery does not affect future pregnancy or breastfeeding.
